Answer:
It already has a sub-floor, it`s under the carpet and vinyl flooring typically. Depending on what type of new flooring you are going to installl a certain amount of prep will need to be done to insure a smooth level surface.
Tile: Hadi Backer or Wonder Board can be installl directly over vinyl as long as you have leveled out any large dips or repaired any broken areas below. Vinyl: As long as you fix and smooth any rough spots, joints and or broken areas you can lay it on top of existing.
Laminate flooring: Same directions plus purchase a foam underlayment to pad floor. Carpet: Etc.
