My bi-level house was built about 40 years ago in Calgary Alberta where winter temperatures can drop to -30 C or -35 C. The second floor living room (13` wide) cantilevers over the basement by 2 feet. There is no insulation behind the plywood soffit of the cantilever. (This explains the freezing cold living room floor in the winter). I would like to insulate the cantilever soffit area before the weather gets cold. The joists are 8` x 2` and are spaced 16` apart (on centre). So, each cavity in the 13 ` wide soffit is about 8`x15`x 2`. What material would you recommend for insulation and vapor barrier? Is there any other material required for this project? Where would the vapor barrier go? (I`ve had 2 conflicting opinions on this so far) And how would I go about installing the whole works? Hope you can help.
